Honest Take — Before You Begin
This is the module I am proudest of in this curriculum, and it is the module I am most worried you are going to misuse. I am proud of it because it refuses to do the thing almost …
Replace the folk-psychology "discipline as character / willpower / virtue" model with the scientific picture: discipline decomposes into three distinct measurable constructs; most of what disciplined people do is not willpower-driven but environment-and-habit-driven; the most robust intervention in the literature is implementation intentions; and a substantial portion of the popular "discipline canon" rests on findings that did not replicate. Take the validated self-assessment instruments. Run the highest-evidence interventions. Read at least one pre-registered replication paper in full. Finish with a calibrated personal model of your own discipline-as-system.
Discipline is a system-level property, not a heroic-individual property. "Be more disciplined!" is "be more performant!" shouted at an app — a non-actionable demand on an underspecified target. The actionable version decomposes into subsystems and finds the bottleneck: trait conscientiousness (fixed hardware; design around it), habit strength (cacheable; ~66-day warm-up), state self-control (variable and context-dependent; don't architect around peak values), implementation intentions (the precompiled if/then that bypasses runtime deliberation entirely — which is exactly why it has the literature's best effect size).
And the replication-failure inventory is a meta-skill you already possess in another domain: be careful which abstractions you build on. You check a library's maintenance status, issue tracker, and test suite before adding it to the Gemfile. Pre-registration, replication, and meta-analysis are the psychology equivalents. Willpower-the-book is the charismatic unmaintained library with 40K stars and a failing build. The discipline of choosing what to believe is itself a discipline.
