Negotiating With Yourself — The Anchoring Root Cause

Internalize that most of your low anchoring is not about the other person. It's about the story you're telling yourself before you walk into the room — and the biases running underneath the story. Build both layers of the fix: the bias layer (Kahneman literacy, pre-commitment structures, daily practice) and the identity layer (the worthiness narrative, named and rewritten). Change the story. The two earlier drafts disagreed about whether this module gets an Engineer's Lens at all, and the disagreement is itself the content — so it is preserved here in full. One draft mapped the bias layer to engineering practice, and the mapping is good: pre-commitment documents are pre-commit hooks (they catch the regrettable concession before it merges; you can still override, but the override becomes deliberate rather than accidental); the bias audit is your test suite (you write tests because you cannot reliably catch your own bugs in real time, and you audit biases for the same reason); the pricing reset is refactoring (decisions made by earlier, less-capable versions of you are constraining the system in ways current-you would not choose; respect the legacy code, don't defer to it). The other draft refused the lens entirely, and for the identity layer it was right — so for the identity layer, the lens is deliberately withheld, and the withholding is the lesson. The engineering instinct to model, instrument, and optimize your own self-talk is itself the pattern to interrupt: observation alone doesn't change a worthiness narrative, and the part of you that wants a clever mechanism instead of slow practice is the same part that has been keeping you anchored low. The honest version: the techniques in Modules 1-10 will lift your outcomes 10-30%. The work in this module is what makes the lift durable across thirty years instead of regressing by Year 3.
