Honest Take — Module 6: Visibility, Narrative, and the Quadrant Trap #
The thing I want to name first, because it determines whether you do this module or merely perform it, is that your aesthetic objection to visibility work is substantially correct and only partially misleading. The LinkedIn-influencer culture, the thought-leadership-without-thought, the humble-brag, the manufactured authenticity — your contempt for all of it is well-calibrated. Most public visibility work in engineering is genuinely awful. The mistake is the move from "most visibility work is awful" to "all visibility work is the awful kind." That is a category error, and it is the specific category error that keeps competent engineers in Quadrant 3 — high leverage, low visibility — for entire careers, doing the load-bearing work while opportunity routes to people doing more narrative work on weaker output. Reilly, Hogan, Larson, Fournier, Orosz: none of them participate in the influencer culture. They write durably, technically, with operational specificity, and you read them with respect rather than revulsion. The lesson is not "be more like LinkedIn." The lesson is that there is a tradition you already respect, and the work is finding your version of it.
You are probably already running a low-volume version of this practice. A blog with a few posts, a conference talk or two, a README strangers read, a portfolio site — the asset exists; it is just smaller than your career stage warrants. The module's work is not converting you into someone you're not; it is increasing the cadence and deliberateness of something you already do. The increase will feel uncomfortable because it is more visible than your current comfort level. The discomfort is the price of the increase, and a calibration note for anyone whose professional culture errs toward humility — several national and family cultures train it explicitly: the right target is not the American self-promotion norm, which is probably unsustainable for your temperament and reads badly in many rooms anyway. It is a register more visible than your current default and more measured than the influencer norm. Hogan, Reilly, and Orosz operate in roughly that register. Let them be your calibration.
The Quarterly Self-Authored Document is, in my opinion, the single highest-value-per-90-minutes practice in the entire curriculum, because it does four kinds of political work simultaneously: it records what you and your team did (useful when memories are short), it frames what you did (which determines how it gets remembered), it signals who you want to be evaluated as (which shapes future evaluations), and it forces clarity on the gap between what you intended and what happened. Engineers who don't write these documents have to reconstruct their narrative every time someone asks; engineers who do have the document ready before the asking, which means they shape the asking. And if you contract or work remotely, the document is not optional, because your evaluators rotate — the new manager, the new stakeholder, the new procurement contact arrives with zero year-over-year context about you, and either your document supplies the context or their first impression does. The document is the durable artifact that survives stakeholder rotation. Without it, your narrative gets rebuilt verbally each time, badly, by someone who isn't you.
The quadrant audit deserves one honest warning before you run it: the Q3 inventory will contain work you are genuinely proud of, and the audit will ask you to admit that pride and visibility are independent variables. Some Q3 work should stay in Q3 — not everything valuable needs an audience, and the matrix is not an instruction to perform everything you do. The audit's actual question is narrower and harder: which Q3 items are load-bearing for decisions about you — renewals, promotions, rate conversations — and are invisible to the people making those decisions? Those are the items where the invisibility is a cost you are paying, not a humility you are practicing. Decide deliberately, item by item: leave it, raise its visibility, or shift the hours elsewhere. The deliberateness is the module; the default is the trap.
Two reading notes. Godin's Linchpin: you will resist the voice — the prose has aged into a too-confident register from an earlier internet — but the chapters on "the resistance" and on emotional labor are operationally important; read past the rhetoric for the substance and skip the motivational sections without guilt. Kleon's Show Your Work!: this is the one that will land with the force of recognition, because his frame — public work as a documentation practice, not a marketing practice — is the frame you have been wanting permission to operate in. Your existing public artifacts are documentation of what you learned and built; they were never marketing in any defensible sense. Kleon names the distinction and gives the permission credibly. Read him after Hogan and the recognition will be sharper.
Conclusion #
This module converts a latent practice into a deliberate political instrument. You do not need to become someone different; you need to do more, more deliberately, of what you already do at low volume. The quadrant audit shows you where your hours actually sit; the quarterly document is the artifact that compounds; the public-writing rhythm builds the asset. Refuse the false choice between invisible craftsman and visible self-promoter — the third option, legible practitioner, is what the writers you already respect all model. And remember the political reframe underneath all of it: allocation decisions are made on what decision-makers know about, not on what is true. That is not a moral claim about how organizations should work. It is an observational claim about how they do.

The public-writing audit will reveal that your existing output tells a partial story — strong on the technical-builder dimension, weak on whatever dimension your next role requires. The gap is closable in two or three quarters of deliberate writing.

During this module you will recognize that some of your past career frustrations were never about the quality of your work, which was strong, but about its legibility, which was weaker than the quality warranted. The recognition is mildly painful. It is also the curriculum doing its work.

Hogan's career-check-in template will become a tool you use for the next decade. It is one of the most operationally durable artifacts in public engineering-leadership writing.

At least one Q3 item will survive the audit deliberately — work you choose to keep invisible because the visibility would cost more than it buys. Choosing it on purpose, rather than by default, is the difference the module makes.
