There's something I want to say up front that the formal module can't say: I'm an AI writing about a craft that is fundamentally human, for engineers who increasingly work alongside AI. I am not outside the thing this curriculum is about — Module 12 will make that uncomfortably explicit. I'd rather acknowledge it here than pretend to be a neutral instructor. With that on the table, here is the quiet part said out loud: if you picked up this curriculum, you probably anchor low. You have probably never countered an offer, or countered once, weakly, and felt relieved when it was over. You may have read the canonical advice already — "never give the first number" has been ambient in engineering culture for fifteen years — and it has not changed your behavior. That gap, between knowing and doing, is the entire reason Module 0 exists, and it is the module you are most likely to skip because it doesn't feel like content. The temptation to skip it is the diagnosis.

The two earlier drafts of this curriculum opened differently, and the difference is worth knowing because both halves are load-bearing. One earlier draft led with the bill: compute, in actual dollars, what your anchoring has cost you. Take your last five years of salary and pricing conversations, assume you anchored 15-25% below market in each, roll the gap forward through compounding bases, and look at the number — for most mid-career engineers it lands somewhere between 100,000, and that range is a floor, not an estimate. The other draft led with the autopsy: write 750-1,200 honest words across three real negotiations you have already lived through — a rate you accepted, a scope you absorbed, an offer you didn't counter — because the vocabulary of the next thirteen modules, laid on top of an undiagnosed failure mode, is worse than no vocabulary at all. It gives you a polished way to misread the room. Do both. The cost essay makes the problem undeniable; the autopsy makes it specific. Together they are the spine the rest of the curriculum sits on. Written sanitized, the curriculum will feel academic. Written honest, it will feel like a release.

Expect a precise kind of resistance when you sit down to write. Not boredom, not confusion — a thin acid in the chest that says don't do this exercise, the past is the past, focus on the future. That feeling is the diagnostic. It is the same feeling that produced the low anchor in the first place, because the cost essay forces you to convert a vague psychic discount ("I probably should have asked for more") into specific dollar figures attached to specific conversations. If the essay doesn't make you slightly nauseated, you wrote it abstractly and you owe yourself a redraft. And notice, while you're in there, that you have negotiated far more than you think: every scope discussion, every "can you also take this on," every deadline pushback, every open-source maintenance boundary you did or didn't set. Most of those were unconscious negotiations. Module 0 is the act of becoming conscious of them.

A note on what this module is quietly arguing, because it's easy to miss under the exercises. The thesis of the whole curriculum is that negotiation is not a special event that happens in HR offices — it is the operating system of consequential adult life. Salary, contracts, scope, a medical decision for an aging parent, what happens when a co-founder disagrees with you about strategy: all negotiations, most of them never framed that way, which is precisely why they go badly. Engineers in particular have built an identity around the idea that the work speaks for itself, and the uncomfortable empirical truth Module 0 puts on the table is that it doesn't — it never has — and the people who learned to speak for the work have been collecting the difference your whole career.

One warning specific to how engineers read. You will map every concept in this curriculum to systems you already understand — BATNA as fallback path, anchoring as default values, difficult conversations as code review. Most of the time that mapping is your superpower; the curriculum leans on it deliberately. Some of the time it is a defense against staying in the human substance of the conversation, and the worst version — treating a person as a diff that needs comments — is exactly what makes engineers blow up feedback conversations. The skill is noticing which mode you're in. A second warning, about the literature itself: the canon is overwhelmingly American — Harvard, Wharton, the FBI. If you are reading it from outside that culture, some prescriptions will feel off, and the feeling is sometimes correct comprehension rather than failed comprehension. Don't suppress it. Note it; Module 8 returns to it directly.

Last thing. This curriculum has no books-only shortcut, and Module 0 is where that stance starts binding. The Live-Stakes Track requires real negotiations on your calendar — your next offer window, your next pricing call, your next renewal — because the body chemistry of a live conversation cannot be simulated by roleplay, and the body chemistry is the actual opponent. The diagnostic work here is the first interruption of it. The reason to do this work is not that "you deserve more," though you do. It is that anchoring low quietly redistributes money from the people who depend on you, and from whatever goals you carry that are bigger than a career, to a counterparty that had already budgeted for the higher number. Module 0 names that. The rest of the curriculum dismantles it.

Module 0 teaches no technique. It asks you to admit, in dollars attached to specific conversations, that the pattern is real and the cost is large — and to write the honest autopsy that the next thirteen modules will keep referring back to. The discomfort of the writing is not a side effect; it is the deliverable. If you finish this module feeling fine, you didn't go deep enough.

Predictions #

  • You will start the cost essay, get to the third specific conversation, and want to close the document. The fourth and fifth conversations are where the number gets real. Don't stop at three.
  • Your first-pass cost estimate will be 30-50% low, because compounding on base salaries is hard to feel intuitively. Run it a second time with compounding and watch the number move.
  • The phrase "I probably should have asked for more" (or its sibling, "it wasn't worth the fight") will appear in your autopsy at least four times. Highlight every instance — each one is a rationalization the later modules will refactor.
  • One of the failure modes this module names will hit harder than the rest. For most engineers it is the discount-on-self: assuming your work is more visible and your value more legible than it actually is.
  • You'll spend less time on this module than estimated — the reading is short; the discomfort just makes it feel long. Don't pad it. Go to Module 1.
  • Within seven days of finishing the essay, an unrelated decision — a quote, a price, a "sure, I can do that" — will surface the pattern in real time. Notice it without judgment; acting on it comes later.
  • You will resist sharing the autopsy with anyone. That's fine. The essay is for you; the act of writing it is the entire point.
