The pattern library is going to land in a specific way: relief. "I have a name for this now" will be the dominant reaction across the patterns, and that relief is real and partly misleading. Naming a pattern is the easy 20% of the work; calibrated response under emotional load is the hard 80%, and the relief of recognition can fool you into thinking the work is done when you have only completed the diagnostic phase. The triangulator who never deals directly. The credit thief who recycles your idea three days later in a different meeting. The information hoarder whose only power lever is asymmetric knowledge of internal context. The empire-builder for whom scope-and-headcount is the end, not the means. You have encountered all of these. Naming them is week one. Responding well while one of them is acting on you in real time, with your nervous system running old reflexes, is years.

You have been mis-classifying some of these patterns, and the mis-classifications have specific costs. The most likely one in your history is calling triangulation a "communication issue." The colleague who never raises a concern with you directly but routes it through your manager or a peer is not having a communication problem; they are running a deliberate political move, and treating it as communication produces exactly the wrong response — you seek more direct conversation with the triangulator, which they continue to avoid, which confirms their preferred dynamic. The calibrated response is to name the pattern explicitly and route future communication through agreed direct channels, with consequences for routing around them. Same shape with the passive-aggressor-via-emoji-and-silence, which is not a personality quirk but a deniable hostility move whose calibrated response is to surface the message under the gesture, in writing. The information hoarder is the hardest of all to recognize, because the symptom on your end is your own confusion, not someone else's visible bad behavior — and confusion-as-diagnostic is a learned skill.

The honest hard part of this module is calibration under load. When the credit thief takes credit for your work in a live meeting, your body fires before your frontal lobe engages, and the response you produce is reliably worse than the one you'd plan in writing. The pattern library trains the planning side; the under-load side is trained by reps and by deliberate rehearsal, which is M8's territory — the two modules are one skill split across diagnosis and delivery. And the integration with M2 matters more here than anywhere else so far: the calibrated response that preserves your character is different from the calibrated response that maximizes the short-term win. The character-preserving version usually wins long-term anyway — that is M2's central claim — but it costs something real in the moment, and the curriculum should not pretend otherwise. The cynic shortcut is available in every one of these patterns. Refusing it is the practice.

One more pattern note, because it is the one whose absence from your library would cost the most: the patterns are not only things done to you. The deliverable's honest version includes the patterns you run yourself — the yes-reflex that trains a manager to over-assign, the avoidance that becomes accidental triangulation when you vent to a peer instead of addressing the person, the information you hold a beat longer than necessary because holding it feels like safety. A pattern library that catalogs only other people's behavior is half a library, and the half it's missing is the half you can actually change this quarter.

A specific note about the bully and the sociopath, because the pattern library has a boundary and pretending otherwise would be the naïf register in diagnostic clothing. Sutton's research is honest that some operators are not patterns to be managed but conditions to be exited, and some environments cannot be improved from the inside. When a pattern response has failed three times against the same person with organizational cover, the question stops being "what's the calibrated response" and becomes M11's question: the stay-or-leave math. Knowing where the library ends is part of owning it.

The pattern library is the easy 20%; calibrated response under emotional load is the hard 80%. You have been mis-classifying triangulation as communication, passive-aggression as quirk, and information-hoarding as someone-else's-disorganization, and each mis-classification produces a worse response than the named version. The character-preserving response usually wins long-term and costs short-term; the curriculum refuses the cynic shortcut. Predictions #

  • Naming the patterns will produce the "I have a name for this now" relief across most of them. Notice which ones don't click — those are the ones you've been inside without seeing.
  • You will discover one pattern you've been participating in unintentionally — most likely avoidance-as-triangulation, routing a concern through a third party because the direct conversation felt expensive. The recognition will sting.
  • The triangulation pattern will rewrite your reading of at least one past colleague. The rewriting is data, not betrayal.
  • The first three times a pattern fires on you in real time after this module, you will execute slightly worse than your written plan. The fourth time, roughly to plan. That's the rep curve; don't read the first three as failure.
  • The deliverable's requirement of a real example per pattern will produce moments where you cannot tell whether a past colleague was acting deliberately or stumbling. The honest answer is often "deliberately, with plausible deniability built in" — and the deniability is itself part of the pattern.
  • You will be tempted to run the pattern library on your family. Resist. Domestic dynamics are not the same shape; this module is for organizational politics specifically.
  • If you ever found or lead something, one pattern — probably the empire-builder — will turn out to describe a failure mode available to a future you. M12 picks that thread up; notice it now.
  • The information-hoarder will be the last pattern you learn to spot, because its only symptom on your side is your own confusion — and you have years of practice attributing your confusion to yourself.
